Those from Gillikin, including Glinda, considered themselves to be of a higher class than those from other areas of Oz. The Munchinkinlanders feared and distrusted Quadlings, who felt the same about Winkies from Vinkus. The land of Oz is a disjointed country whose residents are very different to each other physically and culturally. Wicked covers enormous themes, including politics, racism, terrorism and religion. Dorothy had also inadvertently been the cause of Elhpaba’s sister’s death when her house landed on Nessarose (otherwise known as the Wicked Witch of the East) after the house, Dorothy and her dog Toto were blown to Oz during a storm. Eventually, Elphaba came to a sad end, dying in an accident at the hands of Dorothy Gale from Kansas. At college, Elphaba joined the fight for the rights of Animals where she saved a Lion from being experimented on.Īfter leaving college Elphaba’s physical and moral differences to her community meant she became ostracised, feared and hated. Elphaba had a tragic start to life and terrible obstacles to overcome, however she was clever and attended college, where she became friends with her beautiful but superficial room mate Glinda. The main character is green-skinned Elphaba, who eventually became known throughout Oz as the Wicked Witch of the West.
